Description: This piece probably wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for October 2022, when I attempted Inktober. I only made it two days in, the first prompt was “a piece of candy,” and that got the wheels turning. I created a character inspired by Double Bubble Bubble Gum, and that’s how Gummary Montgomery was born. I still think that name was super clever. His first appearance was in a piece called Sweet Catastrophe, and even though I set him aside for a bit, I knew I’d draw him again. When I finally came back to him, I wanted a scene. Something chaotic, something cinematic. And because I’m a huge Adventure Time fan, my brain immediately went to candy zombies, but through my style. Then it hit me: what better way to kick off the candy zombie apocalypse than a gas station robbery gone wrong? So I drew Gummary in the cashier behind the glass, in the middle of that moment. He’s just sitting there processing all the events that occurred. Meanwhile, his friend Erazmus, the little candy sweet heart guy, didn’t make it. I even added a police donut to the scene, as a nod to The Amazing World Of Gumball, inspired by their literal cop donut character. I imagined the robbery going down, the police office sirens, and the zombies. Complete chaos. Gummary’s world shifts. After this piece, I knew I wasn’t done. The Sweet Apocalypse had officially begun.
